How an overnight duration is calculated
Clock times are converted to minutes after midnight. When the end is earlier than the start, 24 hours are added to the end before subtraction. The unpaid break is then removed.
Example: 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 8 hours 30 minutes elapsed. After a 30-minute unpaid break, worked time is 8:00, or 8.00 decimal hours.
Important limitation
This calculates duration only. Night premiums, overtime eligibility and maximum-shift rules depend on the applicable workplace rules.
